Summary: The Teacher is responsible for planning, and implementing the curriculum for the child development program. Teaching, planning, record keeping, nurturing children and promoting parent participation are among the major responsibilities of this position.
Minimum Duties, Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Maintain and submit time sheet and activity log in a timely manner, ensuring
complete and accurate information.
- Maintain support and on-going communication with Area Content Specialists and center staff.
- Maintain and submit accurate and complete information, e.g., reports and records.
- Ensure timely disposition of memos, correspondence and messages (telephone,
e-mail etc.), to the appropriate personnel.
- Keep a positive attitude toward all aspects of the program and seek ways to
improve the delivery of services.
- Participate in the Orientation to the Program and Agency for all staff as required.
- Attend staff meetings as required.
- Contribute to the efforts of the program to meet or exceed state and local

- Complete a daily visual health check on each child upon arrival in the classroom, reporting illness or other concerns to the supervisor immediately.
- Supervise and monitor children at all times.

- Prepare and distribute supplies and materials in the classroom and on the playground before and after activity periods.
- Be actively involved with children at all times during outdoor play.
- Handle discipline and/or behavior problems that arise during the day in a positive, appropriate manner.
- Assist the children in developing self-help skills such as toileting, dressing, eating, toothbrushing, and any other area involving health, safety, and hygiene.
- Keep the Head Teacher informed of all activities and concerns in the classroom.
- Document accidents and incidents at the center and forward to the supervisor on the same day.
- Conduct the required home visits and parent/teacher conferences for the purpose of assessment and family support, to share and educational strategies between school and home.
- Provide a welcoming atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom.
- Complete required screenings (developmental, speech, social-emotional, behavioral) on each child in the classroom within the required time frame.
- Assess children for strengths and areas that need support utilizing Teaching Strategies GOLD three times a year.
- Input Teaching Strategies GOLD child assessment into database three time per year, ensuring that anecdotal observations and supporting documentation is included and accurate as indicated on the timeline.
- Use Teaching Strategies GOLD data in communicating progress with parents and jointly planning individual goals for children.
- Use Teaching Strategies GOLD data to enhance CLASS planning of academic content including literature/language arts, math, social studies, and art.
- Prepare food as needed for classroom children and ensure all food items are cleaned up and stored properly.
- Document meal counts for classroom and compile and check center meal counts
- Provide input on evaluation of the classroom teacher assistant, making recommendations for a staff development plan as needed.
- Act as a bus escort to and from school, to dental/medical appointments as needed.
- Act as a bus escort on field trips.
Essential Job Functions
Essential job functions are duties that are equally as important as minimum job functions; however, reasonable accommodations can be made to complete these responsibilities.
- Interact with children in a positive, appropriate manner at all times.
- Plan and direct extra-curricular activities of the center such as field trips, lapsits, etc.
- Prepare school to home activities according to the needs of individual children as identified in required screening and Teaching Strategies GOLD.
- Send home parent information and other school to home communication as directed.
- Complete a daily playground sweep, picking up and disposing of glass and debris.
- Complete a classroom safety checklist and a playground safety checklist monthly and submitted to the Head Teacher.
- Ensure timelines are followed in the collection of curriculum materials and other written documentation from center staff, checking items for accuracy prior to forwarding to appropriate personnel.
- Inventory food and maintain food supply for the center ensuring all food is

- Collect and check for accuracy the teacher assistant’s time sheet.
- Check classroom daily for cleanliness and report any discrepancies to the Head Teacher.
- Submit non-federal share reports and documentation for the classroom monthly by the due date.
- Attend IEP meetings when possible.
- Implement new ideas and techniques received in training.
- Observe the Agency’s confidentiality policy regarding participants, records,
technology, reports, and staff.
- Adhere to professional standards of ethics as outlined in Personnel Policies.
- Establish and foster good working relationships within the Agency and in the community.
- Demonstrate work habits which comply with Agency Personnel Policies and
- Act as a representative of the Head Start Program and the
Community Action Program Committee, Inc. within the community.
- Participate in community events that promote Community Action Head Start.
- Serve as an advocate for the Head Start Program, participants in the program,
Agency, and community.
- Report noted violations of agency Policies and Procedures to the supervisor immediately.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Classroom Teacher Assistant
Competencies: The competencies listed here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job – organizational skills,
record-keeping, leadership, problem solving, time management, self directed and requires minimum supervision. Employee must have good literacy skills, being able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and determine percentages
Computer Skills: Ability to use word processing software, database management system, e-mail and internet.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each minimum and essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Must have an Associate degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or a related field with classes equivalent to a minor in Early Childhood Education. Applicants must have a minimum of one year experience in Head Start or a related field.
Other Qualifications: Applicants must have a current Florida Driver’s license, reliable transportation, satisfactory criminal records check for abuse and neglect, negative TB skin test, drug testing as required and state required minimum vehicle insurance and uninsured motorist insurance. Applicants must meet all Dept. of Children and Families requirements for employment and must be able to successfully complete the forty hour child care class.
Physical Demands: This position requires the employee to be actively involved with children at all times. They will be required to stand for long periods of time while working in the classroom and on the playground. Moderate to vigorous physical activity is required throughout the day. The employee must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, hop and skip and are expected to sit on the floor with children during circle time and center time. The employee must be able to lift 40 lbs. This position also requires the employee to ride a school bus. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with a diagnosed disability to perform essential job functions.
Work Environment: The employee will be required to perform work indoors and outdoors. Work location will be determined yearly. Employee can be expected to be moved from one center to another during the course of employment.
